Austin also covers such essential strategies as using power words, constructing titles according to his winning formulas, and generating excitement about potential products through words alone. Once readers have successfully mastered the skills outlined in this article, they will be ready to move on to Step 2 in Austin’s article series upon its release.
Your salescopy is one of the most important parts of your website because you don’t have the opportunity to meet with your visitors face to face and sell your products. Basically, your salescopy has to act like a good salesperson and convince people to do business with you. In this series of 12 articles, I am going to share with you 12 easy steps you can follow to write compelling, effective salescopy that is guaranteed to convert visitors into customers.
Step 1: Write Compelling Headlines and Sub-Headlines
Your headline and sub-headline are the most important parts of your salescopy because they are the first things your visitors see. As such, they are the keys to generating enough interest to encourage your visitors to keep reading and get them excited about your product. Your headline can have a huge effect on your sales, so you should spend some time creating and testing good ones until you find that magic combination of words that generates the most sales for you.
The headlines that are the most successful are always the ones that emphasize your product’s most compelling benefit. For example, it might describe a problem that lets visitors know that they need to read the rest of your sales letter in order to find out how to solve it. The most important thing to remember is that your headline should be full of benefits that will immediately appeal to your audience and make them eager to learn more.
You can use what I like to call “power words” that can give your headline an extra punch. Some good power words include:
• Free
• Bargain
• Sale
• Proven
• Easy
• Results
• Quick
• Save
• You
• Guaranteed
In addition, the most effective headlines usually promise an end result. For example, “how to” headlines or ones that include “take action” words are often the best. Some good phrases you can use to this effect are:
• “How to learn…”
• “Learn the secrets…”
• “How to become…”
• “Why you need…”
• “Discover how to…”
• “Increase your (benefit of product or service)…”
• “Stop…”
• “Reduce…”
• “Decrease your (problem your product or service solves)…”
These attention-grabbers can generate a lot of excitement about your product. A good headline should meet the following criteria:
• It should define a serious problem that your reader faces.
• It should promise a great benefit as part of the solution to the problem.
• It should include power words (only where they make sense, don’t just throw them in anywhere).
• It should attract the right audience by using words they will relate to.
Your best bet to finding the headline that will work wonders for you is to keep testing multiple versions, tweaking them, and then testing them again until you come up with one that converts the most people.
So there you have it; Step 1 in creating effective salescopy for your website is to write compelling headlines and sub-headlines. Now that you understand how to do that, you’re ready for the next step. In my next article, we’ll talk about Step 2 in the salescopy process: Making your visitors visualize the problem.
